Colwell Baptist Church

Charity No. 1202973

What we believe

In all we do, we try to join in with the mission of God, in reaching out to make disciples and to make a difference in God's world. We want to be a church in the community, for the community.

It’s clear in the Bible that Jesus didn’t just ask people to believe in Him – He invited them to follow Him, as disciples.  So we welcome people to join us as we aim to become fully devoted followers of Jesus rather than just “Sunday Christians”.  We believe that Jesus changes and transforms people’s lives – and we think that being a follower of Jesus makes life better and makes us better at life.

Specifically, as a church, we believe...

...in the Bible

As an evangelical church, we believe that the whole of the Bible is “inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” – 2 Timothy 3v16

...in Jesus

We know that Jesus (as he is revealed to us in the Bible), is our Lord and our ultimate authority.  We believe that as a local church we can trust Jesus to guide and direct us.  This means that all the big decisions facing us as a church are made by the church members coming together in prayer; seeking to hear what Jesus might be saying to us – by His Spirit and through the Bible.

...in baptism

To us, the Bible is clear; Jesus said anyone who chooses to follow Him should make their decision public by being baptised (literally, “dipped”) in water. This might seem like quite a strange thing to do, but we baptise people when they become followers of Jesus because that’s what Jesus said we should do! Sometimes we do this in a small pool in the church, and sometimes we do it in the sea nearby…so, if you’re on the beach at Colwell, keep an eye out for us!

Baptism is important for lots of reasons and is meaningful in lots of different ways – please do pop in and ask us if you would like to know more about why this is so important to us.

...in living it out

We also believe that Jesus has commissioned everyone who follows Him to share their story and their experience of Jesus with others. Jesus told people to make disciples and make a difference all over the world - to be in the community and for the community – so that's what we aim to do here in Colwell, across the wider West Wight area - and beyond; to the ends of the earth.
